There’s no holiday destination as luxurious as one that has “gold” in its name. Gold Coast Beaches are no exception. Each beach on the coast is different, and between them, is something for everyone. They boast lush scenery, calm waters, professional-grade surfing, and unique eats.
But how do you know which one is right for you? You can’t without the advice of a local. That’s why we’ve put together this guide for your convenience.
Want to know what glittering bay is waiting for you? Find out below!
Currumbin Creek
We’re starting our list with one of the most laidback Gold Coast beaches. Currumbin Creek is a mellow, local spot where visitors can sunbathe like locals. This Gold Coast suburb has a small-town feel where crowds and skyscraper shadows won’t bother you.
Wanting to try out a specific water sport? Currumbin Creek is the most beginner friendly of the Gold Coast beaches to do it.
Right now, you’ll see the water filled with beginner-to-expert stand up paddle boarders. It’s the current craze.
Though not the most exciting spot for surfing, the creek is a great spot to learn. The mellow breaks are great for beginners or those looking for a mellow day on the waves. Want to try out some new tricks or work on form? These humble waves are the place to do it!
The swimming area is netted, so you and your family can swim safely. After spending a day on the sand, towel off and head into town for some great local beer.
Balter Brewing’s flagship is impressing locals who say it’ll soon be a household name. If you’re not in the mood for beer, check out The Salt Mill or Dune Cafe for mellow, beachy eats.
Coolangatta
Of all the Gold Coast beaches, this one is pretty cool (get it?). It’s only one of two north-facing beaches on the coast, making it a great pick for swimmers. These north-facing waters are great for surfing as well.
On summer days when the waves are high, you’re likely to find a champion surfer or two hanging ten. But you don’t have to be their level to surf here. Between the shallows, the Greenmount, and the break, there are wave levels for everyone.
When you’re done splashing in the water or the sun gets too hot, take a stroll to Point Danger. The views of the lush landscape and the coast will blow your Facebook friends’ minds.
This walk isn’t just for the summer. In the cooler months, whales can be seen swimming by for their mating season.
Time for some midday or post-beach eats? You won’t be disappointed. The Beach Burrito Company is a staff favourite.
You can find them a few blocks away from the beach on “The Strand”. We recommend grabbing a table and a bucket of beers (or margs!), then indulging in the taste of Mexico.
Looking for something a little less exotic? You’ll find it and the locals at Griffith Street Larder.
Finish your day off by watching the sunset and eating some delicious dessert from Gelato Messina.
Broadbeach
Of all the beaches on this list and maybe all the Gold Coast, this one is the most family friendly. The proximity to kid-friendly areas and a plethora of surf schools makes it a great kid spot.
Kurrawa Surf Life-Saving Club patrols the beach for those needing help. When they’re not ready to save lives, they give safety-centered surfing lessons.
When the lesson is over or the sun gets too hot, families can head over to shady Pratten park.
Kids get to play on the covered jungle gym or play footy while parents relax in the shade. Fairground rides and snacks are available on its edges year round.
When it’s time for some grub, head over to the Lambshop or the Loose Moose. The Moose is a family friendly bar that will be on your most-fun memory list for years to come
If you’re not blessed with a sunny day, the Pacific Fair shopping centre is a must-see. It offers shoppers high-end brands and local wares, so everyone can find a treasure to take home.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Broadbeach on the first or third Sunday of the month, check out their crafts market. With crafts and wares from local artisans, you’re sure to find something unique to bring home!
Burleigh Heads
If you asked locals which of the Gold Coast beaches was the least touristy, Burleigh heads would have the win. It’s a favourite local spot with headland cliffs and family-friendly walking paths.
Some say Burleigh’s head is the Gold Coast’s answer to Byron Bay. Its lush headland paired with rock coast is a great postcard to send home.
If you want a break from the beach, Burleigh has hectares of the national park nearby.
Non-beachers should also check out James Street, an Australia-wide famous shopping destination. Looking for some fresh fish to slap on the BBQ? There are awesome local fishmongers all around town.
Locals and visitors alike love the chic-yet-approachable feel of Rabbath Burleigh. They serve an eclectic mix of Lebanese and Meditteranean food you never knew you needed.
Surfers and swimmers can enjoy great conditions year round, in this town with its surfer-friendly vibe.
Surfers Paradise
We couldn’t make a list of Gold Coast beaches without Surfer’s Paradise. That would be like listing the most-fun places in the world without mentioning Disney. It’s the Gold Coast’s claim to fame!
As the name implies, surfers frequent this beaches tepid waters. The waves aren’t anything crazy, but it’s THE place for surfers to hang out.
For everyone else, there’s a long walking path that spans the entire beach. Stroll it after a big meal at Surfer’s Sandbar or Betty’s Burgers.
It’s lined with outdoor gym equipment for those who have really out-done it or have been lying on the beach all day.
If you’re going for the sunbathing, be sure to get there early. The high-rises cast shadows on the beach around 3 pm.
